Player Divisions

Hockey in Illinois offers opportunities for players of every age, skill level, and background. AHAI organizes the game into distinct divisions to ensure fair competition, player development, and pathways to higher levels of play. Explore the divisions below to learn more about each structure, eligibility, and opportunities.

Tier I

The highest level of youth hockey in Illinois. Also known as AAA hockey, Tier I teams compete at the national level and provide an elite development path for players aiming to advance to USA Hockey District and National Championships.

Tier II

The most common level of youth travel hockey. Tier II Clubs field teams across multiple age groups and skill levels, with rules that balance competition and provide opportunities statewide.

Tier III

Local programs focused on fun, development, and accessibility. Commonly referred to as "House" or "Rec" hockey, Tier III offers balanced competition with less travel and a strong emphasis on skill-building and participation.

Girls Hockey

Opportunities for female players at every age group and skill level. Girls’ hockey in Illinois continues to grow, with female-only teams competing in Tier I, Tier II and High School levels.

High School Hockey

A uniquely Illinois tradition. High school hockey offers students the chance to represent their school in league play and the annual State Championship, including Varsity, JV, and combined divisions.

Disabled Hockey

Programs dedicated to making hockey accessible to all athletes, including sled hockey, special hockey, and warrior hockey. These divisions provide opportunities for players of all abilities to participate in the game.
