Background Screening
USA Hockey has required background screening since the 1993–94 season. Previously, screenings were managed by each club, but now the process is centralized at the national level through NCSI. This change ensures consistency, strengthens USA Hockey’s SafeSport program, and meets U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee requirements.
The national background screening program begins April 1 each season, at the same time registration opens. USA Hockey has partnered with NCSI, an industry leader in background checks, to provide this service.
Who must be screened
All adults who have regular contact with athletes under 18 must complete a background screen before working with them. This includes:
- Coaches
- Officials
- Board members
- Employees
- Volunteers
