Tier III Info

Tier III hockey is where many players begin their organized hockey journey after completing Learn to Skate and Learn to Play programs. It is open to players of all skill levels, from new skaters to experienced players, and provides a welcoming, affordable entry point into the sport.

In Illinois, Tier III hockey includes three program options. The first is ADM Hockey, or the American Development Model, which is a USA Hockey framework focused on age-appropriate training, multi-sport participation, and developing skills over winning. ADM lays the foundation for long-term athlete growth and success. The second option is Tier III House (“C”) teams, which are in-house programs that play exclusively at their home rink. Some house teams may also participate in local tournaments, but the main benefit is a consistent schedule with practices and games held in one location. Finally, Tier III Travel (“B”) teams are formed through a draft or tryout process. These teams compete against other programs across Illinois and often take part in out-of-town tournaments, offering a natural next step for players who have completed ADM or participated in house hockey.

The main difference between house and travel hockey is where the games are played. House teams practice and compete only at their home rink, while travel teams face other programs at rinks across the state.

Tier III hockey welcomes players of all experience levels, from beginners to more advanced skaters. Teams are generally filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and programs emphasize equal ice time to support both development and enjoyment.

Tier III is also the most affordable option compared to Tier II travel hockey. Many Member Organizations help families manage costs by offering loaner gear—especially for goalies—hosting fundraising events, and connecting families with quality used equipment through places like Play It Again Sports and RinkRatRentals.com.

Tier III programs rely on well-trained, USA Hockey–certified volunteers, including parents and rink staff, to coach teams and support association boards. The focus is on recreation and player development, but the certification requirements are the same as those for coaches at every level of USA Hockey. In fact, your child’s coach may hold the very same license as a professional coach.

Tier III Committee

The Tier III Committee oversees the structure and operation of Tier III hockey in Illinois, which includes House (“C”) and Travel (“B”) programs. The Tier III Committee works to maintain fair, accessible, and development-focused opportunities for players and families entering organized hockey.
