Winnetka Center Randall Alt Driven To ‘Skate Hard, Pass Hard, Shoot Hard’
By Ross Forman
Skating for the Winnetka Warriors Mite 4 team in a rivalry game against Wilmette Mite 4, Randall Alt netted a shootout goal that he long will remember and, though only 9 years old now, he already knows the hockey lingo:
“Scoring bar down,” was a career highlight, he said.
Alt, who lives in Winnetka and is a fourth grader at Crow Island School, played for the Warriors squirt minor team this past season. He’s looking to play for the Winnetka squirt major team in the fall.
A center in uniform No. 52, he was a mite 4 champion – and he’s skated his entire career in Winnetka green.
“Randall is the type of player that coaches want to have on their team, but other teams hate to play against,” said Winnetka hockey director Jimmy Warrick. “He plays aggressive and physical and scores goals. He never stops working. His work ethic is unmatched and embodies everything we look for in a Warrior.”
Alt describes his style of play as, “Skate hard, pass hard, shoot hard.”
In St. Louis this past season, Alt scored three goals in a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Sting, two days after defeating the Sting 6-1. “When the game was tied 2-2, I blocked the Sting’s shot, and skated up, pumped my shoulder down, and scored top shelf right,” he said.
His goal for the upcoming season is simple: win a state championship.
“I work so hard because I love the sport. I practice hard because I love the sport. What fuels me is protein,” said Alt, who praised a host of coaches who have aided his young career, including Coach Bill, Coach Eaton, Coach Richard, Coach Kozel, Coach McNerney, Coach Charlie, Coach Vail, Coach Hickey, Coach Jimmy, Coach John and Coach Evan. “My coaches have taught me how to play hockey and helped me learn the game.”
However, when asked if he could foresee himself as a coach one day, Alt simply said, “No.”
