Lucas Gibbs Savors Memories As A Center For The Huskies

By Ross Forman
Lucas Gibbs is ready for his second season this fall skating for the Huskies bantam AA team, especially after a memorable moment this past season: winning their last tournament, marking the first time he had won a tournament in all his years playing.

“That was a huge highlight,” said Gibbs, 13, who lives in Plainfield and will be in eighth grade at Ira Jones Middle School in the fall.

A center in jersey No. 4, Gibbs has skated for the Huskies since his second year as a squirt. He has tallied hat tricks and player of the game accolades over the years.

His first hat trick came as a peewee, and it still stands out as a career highlight.

“(As) a bantam, I (am) able to (check), but you don’t need to hurt (an opponent) to make a big play,” he said. “While big hits are cool, they do pretty much the same thing as just pining (an opponent). I skate hard, give 100 percent every time I’m in the ice and don’t get penalties that can hurt my team.”

Gibbs said his hockey motivation is his teammates. “I have met so many different people and connected with them not just about hockey, but (also about) music, video games, fishing, etc. It’s cool to get to know so many people,” through the sport, he said.

To that, his goal for the upcoming season is simple: “Have fun … it’s my last bantam season.”

Gibbs said the Huskies coaches and players have been great over the years. “I like my teammates and all the (others) I’ve played with. The culture of the club is awesome, always positive. I’d choose this club any day over others because of the people,” he said.

Off the ice, Gibbs enjoys playing his electric guitar. “I am in a band with some friends from school. I like to play and write my own music; it helps me unwind and process after each day,” he said.

He also enjoys rollerblading, playing shinny, street hockey with his younger brother, Drew, 10, who also plays for the Huskies, and snow skiing. “My extended family goes to Colorado every winter for a ski trip,” he said.
