Addison Stewart delivered the highlight game on the showcase day for Illinois high school hockey.

The New Trier forward in uniform No. 78 had a four-goal game, including the overtime game-winner on Sunday, March 16, leading the Trevians to a 5-4 win over Barrington for the AHAI Girls High School Hockey State Championship, played at the United Center.

“I still can’t believe it,” said New Trier head coach Ben Piskor. “I thought we were down-and-out when they went ahead 4-2 (at 9:45 of the third period). I felt the energy come out of the tires for a bit. But the girls rebounded and we came back.

“I can’t believe it; it’s just fantastic.”

Stewart netted her fourth at 9:44 of overtime off a centering pass from Alexis Bornhoeft.

“Addie Stewart was something special tonight. I have never seen a girl go that crazy; she killed it,” Piskor said. “She was frustrated during the (state) playoffs because it wasn’t going in. I told her after (the state championship game) that she was just saving it for when it mattered.

“It was nice to see her rewarded for all her hard work.”

Piskor added, “She comes to the rink every day and is not going to be outworked by anybody. She leads this team with her heart and soul. I coached her when she was 10 years-old and she is always the same: humble, works her butt off and just does everything the right way.”

Barrington struck first as Evie Galvan scored her first of two less than two minutes into play. The Trevians answered with two Stewart goals to lead 2-1 after the first period.

The second period was all Barrington as the Fillies scored twice (Galvan and Rachel Gorbatenko) to take a 3-2 lead into the third.

Barrington pushed its lead to 4-2 at 9:45 of the third on a goal from Nicole Gorbatenko.

But then the Trevians took over with three unanswered goals.

“I told the team (before overtime) that it was going to be a dirty goal (to win the game),” Piskor said. “We’ve had a lot of pretty goals up until this point, but overtime is where things get crazy.

“It was a great play behind the net from Alexis Bornhoeft, feeding Addy, who took advantage of it."

Freshman Julia Schuster was the only other goal-scorer for the Trevians.

“I’m really proud of what the girls were able to accomplish tonight,” Piskor said. “We’re in the business of winning state titles at New Trier, so it was great having New Trier Green and the girls both win.”

Ironically, Piskor was a linesman for the girls’ high school hockey state championship game in 2022 and his first-ever coaching gig was with New Trier girls in 2014. “This has been a fantastic experience this season,” he said.

Juliet Drake faced 25 Barrington shots, while Riley Sherrin endured 24 from New Trier.

“Juliet Drake has been our horse this season. We would not be where we are if it wasn’t for her,” Piskor said.
