IceDogs Left Wing Oancea Set to Skate in Slovenia This Summer

David Oancea, a left wing for the IceDogs PSL Squirt U10 Team, wears uniform No. 29 for his birthday on June 29th and to replicate a favorite NHL player, Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, who wears the same number.

“I admire his speed, skill and determination … wearing No. 29 motivates me to work hard and improve, just like him,” said Oancea, 10, who lives in Buffalo Grove.

“I play left wing and really enjoy that it allows me to be offensive and defensive, which (is) exciting. As a left wing, I love being in a position where I can help create scoring opportunities while also being responsible for backchecking and supporting my defense. I enjoy the speed and agility required to make plays along the boards and the challenge of trying to get around the opposing defense.

“What I like most about the position is that it lets me be creative with my plays while also working with my teammates to set up goals. I can use my speed to get to the net or set up passes and I always try to help my team in every part of the game, offense or defense.

“Playing left wing lets me be part of the action all over the ice, which motivates me to keep improving my skating, puck handling and decision-making. It’s a role that requires a lot of responsibility, but that’s what makes it fun and rewarding.”

Oancea, a fifth-grader at Hellenic American Academy, a Greek school, is learning English and Greek. But hockey is his favorite language.

“My style of play is fast and aggressive,” he said. “I love using my speed to get the puck and create scoring chances. I’m always looking to make plays and get in the right spots to either take a shot or set up a pass. I like to keep things moving and keep the pressure on the other team.

“I work hard on defense—I’m not afraid to get into the corners and battle for the puck. Sometimes, I get so involved in the game that I end up in the penalty box, but hey, it just means I’m giving it my all. Whether it’s scoring goals, making plays, or getting into those tough situations, I’m always focused on doing whatever it takes to help my team.”

And it’s Oancea’s IceDogs – teammates and coaches – who have helped him grow as a player and a person. In games and practices.

“Every practice is filled with encouragement, challenges and so much fun. They push me to work harder and make sure I enjoy every moment on the ice,” he said. “I can’t explain how much their support means to me. I’ve learned so much from them; I’m grateful for how they’ve helped me improve and feel more confident in my game.

“I’m excited to continue learning, growing and playing my best.”

Oancea has tallied a career-high this season in goals – and he’s thrilled to see his hard work pay off. “This year, I’ve really focused on being in the right place at the right time and making the most of my chances. It’s been awesome to see that effort led to so many goals,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of fun celebrating with my teammates. They’re always there to cheer me on and make every goal feel even more special. It’s a great feeling to know that I’m helping the team, and I’m proud of how much I’ve grown as a player this season. I’m motivated to keep getting better and score even more in the future.”

Oancea credits part of his on-ice success to…. Connor Bedard.

Oancea idolizes the Chicago Blackhawks star “because of his incredible skill and vision on the ice and his ability to score in any situation,” Oancea said. “He’s fast and talented, and super smart with the puck, which makes him a complete player. Watching him play makes me want to improve every part of my game, especially my shooting and playmaking. I imagine myself one day playing for the Blackhawks, following in his footsteps, and bringing that same excitement to the ice.”

Ironically, Oancea already has been tied to his beloved Chicago Blackhawks.

Last season, Oancea was selected to serve as a Junior Emcee for the Chicago Blackhawks at multiple “Best Kids Day Ever” events, part of the team’s “Best Day Ever” game series, an action-packed, family-friendly event with pre-game fun and entertainment for fans of all ages.

“The energy was incredible; being a part of such a big day with the Blackhawks was an experience I’ll never forget,” he said.

“When I heard about the audition, I was so excited—I knew I had to go for it. But when I walked in, I was all over the place—super excited, but also super nervous. I remember my heart was racing so fast. It was a mix of emotions all at once.”

Oancea was ultimately standing next to Jon Hansen and Genna Rose at the United Center.

“I was living the dream; it felt unreal,” he said. “I remember soaking it all in, trying to stay calm, but inside I was like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe this is happening!’

I wanted them to see the real me—the excitement, the energy and how much I wanted to be part of such an amazing event. When I found out I got picked, I was over the moon, so happy. I couldn’t believe it.

“When I was hosting the Blackhawks game, it was a mix of excitement, nerves and pure happiness. Standing in front of the camera, knowing I was right there with my favorite team and all the Blackhawks fans, was overwhelming. I remember feeling so nervous in the first minute—my heart was racing, my hands were shaky, and I kept thinking, ‘Wow, I’m actually doing this!’

“As soon as I saw how excited the fans were and how much energy they were bringing, they liked me, and they welcomed me – something clicked. I realized they were enjoying the show, and that gave me so much confidence. The moment I felt that connection with the crowd, it was like a switch flipped. I started feeding off the energy around me and got more comfortable in front of the camera. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. I was so proud of myself for stepping up and doing something so big; I was so happy to be representing the Blackhawks in front of their fans.

“Jon Hansen and Genna Rose were amazing. They were super friendly, so supportive and made me feel like I was part of the team the whole time. It was more than just hosting a game. I had the chance to see behind the scenes at the Blackhawks’ arena, which was amazing. I got to meet Tommy Hawk, the coolest mascot ever. Plus, I met the game commentators, who were super nice and made me feel even more special. Working with the Blackhawks, feeling like part of the team, and having this once-in-a-lifetime experience was a dream come true. I’ll never forget that feeling.”

Oancea said the Blackhawks experience helped him as a player, boosting his confidence and focus. “Hosting the Blackhawks game taught me how to stay calm and perform under pressure, which is super helpful during games. It also showed me the power of teamwork—Jon, Genna and everyone (else) made me feel part of the team, just like my hockey teammates do. I learned that when you believe in yourself and work together, you can handle anything, whether it’s on the ice or in front of a crowd.”

Oancea said he was more nervous for his duties at the Blackhawks game as opposed to hosting the Blackhawks game.

“A big game is intense, but I’m used to the ice and being with my team. Hosting in front of the camera, with the Blackhawks and all those fans watching, was totally different,” he said. “I had to speak, stay focused, entertain and make sure everyone was having fun. It was a totally new experience, and I was super nervous at first. But once I got into it, I felt like I could handle anything—just like on the ice!”

Oancea added: “That night with the Blackhawks was an incredible experience—it was the moment I realized that dreams do come true if you believe and work for them. I’ve always dreamed of being part of something like this, and when I finally had the chance, it felt unreal. I want to tell every kid out there: Never stop dreaming. You might have doubts or tough days, but if you keep working hard, stay focused, and never give up, anything is possible. One day, you can achieve your dream, too.”

THE SKATING SQUIRT

Oancea played his first game at age 5 – and admittedly was pumped, but nervous.

“I was more focused on not falling than shooting the puck. I was just trying to stay upright. Even though I didn’t score, the feeling of being out there, playing the game I loved, was like nothing else.

“I wanted to start hockey because it looked like the coolest sport ever. I mean, who wouldn’t want to fly around on (the) ice, score goals and have all that action. Plus, I’ve always loved the idea of mixing speed with teamwork and strategy. When I first saw players crashing into the boards and making crazy plays, I thought, ‘That’s exactly what I want to do!’ The second I got on the ice, I knew I was in the right place. Hockey is just the perfect mix of everything I love: fast, fun and full of surprises.”

Next summer, Oancea brings his skates and more to Slovenia, joining the 2025 World Euro Invite in Bled, Slovenia for an international youth hockey tournament organized by the same directors as the CCM World Invite held annually in Chicago. “This tournament (in Slovenia) gives young players like me the chance to compete against teams from around the world, experience cultural tours and just have an amazing summer. I can’t wait to be part of this incredible experience.

“I’m so excited to represent Team USA. It’s a dream come true. I’m feeling a mix of excitement and nerves—it’s a big step, but I’m ready for it. I’m not just playing for myself … I’m playing for my team, my coaches and everyone who’s supported me. This international experience means so much. I’m excited to not only compete, but also to grow as a player and person. Dreams come true when you work hard.”

Giving Thanks: “My coaches at Glacier Ice Arena (in Vernon Hills) have helped me grow so much as a player, teaching me not just the skills but also how to stay focused, work hard and enjoy the game. They believe in me and push me to reach my full potential, which is why I’m always excited to get better and keep playing.”

Hobbies: “I love traveling, exploring new places, trying new foods and experiencing different cultures with my family. I also love vlogging and filming my trips, sharing my experiences on Instagram. It’s a fun way to document my adventures and connect with others who share the same passion for travel.”

Long-term Goal: Play hockey at the highest level possible. “Beyond hockey, I also hope to inspire other kids to chase their dreams, just like I am, and to always believe that anything is possible, if you put in the work.”
